Shayla’s Guest of the Month – Angel Payne

Welcome back, everyone! Angel Payne is one of my best friends and such a gifted author. I spent some time earlier this month talking with Angel about her career, our friendship and what we can expect from her in the future. I hope you enjoy the interview.

Name a movie you’ve seen at least five times and why it’s a favorite.

Angel: Well, something that always stuns people about me is that the show I’ve seen more than any movie is “Phantom of the Opera,” the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage play. To this day, it’s my favorite show—the music, the sets, the costumes, the angsty and tragic love story—and THAT chandelier!! Gah! I’ve seen it 27 times in 4 different cities, and have cried my eyes out every single time. As soon as the phantom sings “You alone can make my song take flight,” I lose it! And just for the record, I thought the movie was awesome as well—but nothing beats seeing it live on stage!

List five adjectives you’d use to describe yourself.

Angel:  Obsessive. Emotional. Imaginative. Moody. INSANE!

Name one funny/quirky trait you have others may not know about.

Angel:  My best story ideas come when I’m on the treadmill at the gym. No lie! Guess that’s one reason to get my backside in there, right?

Caffeine of choice: tea, coffee, or soda?

Angel: Coffee every time. LOL.

What does your work space look like?

Angel: I’m totally not showing a picture of it, because right now it’s a complete mess! LOL! My main desk/work area is at my little writing desk, with my Rey (“Star Wars”) action figure watching over me, and assorted pictures and plaques that remind me to be grateful every day for the life I live—which is pretty freaking amazing! When I need a switch-up, I head for one of my favorite coffee places here in the neighborhood—and during the California off season, maybe to a place near the beach where I can see the water.

Where is your bucket-list vacation?

Angel: Always, ALWAYS it is Paris! Okay, so this isn’t exactly a bucket list thing because I’ve been there already, but my soul belongs in that city. It’s the most magical place on earth. If I had to pick a place that I’ve never been before, it’d likely be Amsterdam for the culture and Fiji for the adventure.

What music are you listening to? Do you play it while you write?

Angel: My friends all tease me about being the musical theater geek in the group—I have a huge playlist from all kinds of musicals, with current faves being “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Spring Awakening”—though I love the classics, as well. I also really love emotional alternative rock. Matt Bellamy, the lead singer and songwriter of Muse, writes the most gorgeous lyrics. Other favorites are Thirty Seconds to Mars and ChVurches, as well as classic geniuses like Bowie and Queen.

What's your next release?

Angel: The BOLT Saga is out everywhere throughout this summer!

Last but not least, what’s YOUR Shayla Black kiss?

Angel: Until I can’t think straight with Jack Cole! I will COMPLETELY take that!!

Readers, tell me in the comments below, what is YOUR Shayla Black kiss today?
