Decisions, Decisions…

July 30th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

Hi gang! First, a quick shout out to frequent blog visitor, Renee. A birdie told me your birthday was last Friday. Happy belated birthday!! Hope you had a fabulous day.

Okay, so onto the topic at hand. My life has been FULL of decisions lately. Some pivotal, some mundane. Some I hope to be able to share with you soon, but for now will have to wait. (Gee, is this sounding like a poem or greeting card?) Anyway, some I can’t quite settle on and I’m hoping you can help me.

The first is a decision about a title. I’m actively (read: frantically) writing the first in my Doomsday Brethren paranormal series. I have no working title for this book, and I really, really prefer to have one when I write. So…I managed to scrape 2 brain cells together (can be really challenging sometimes) and create a blurb for this book:

Cursed by a witch both ancient and evil, Marrok of Cadbury has lived in isolation for fifteen centuries without friendship, sex or hope. When he begins dreaming of another LeFay woman with the trademark violet eyes and birthmark, he doesn’t care that the rest of her features aren’t those of the spell-happy witch who doomed him. This woman is his ticket to freedom, to death, and he’s willing to do anything to force her to release him—even abduct her. But soon he discovers they are mates and that he must protect her from a burgeoning evil that knows she holds the key to a power both terrible and awesome—a power evil will do anything to seize.

Olivia Gray started over. After her mother’s death, she discovered that the father she thought dead before her birth is actually alive and in London. Determined to track him down and find the acceptance she’s always yearned for, she moves to the British capitol, opens an art gallery, and begins her search. It isn’t long before a naked stranger is starring in her erotic dreams. Suddenly, he appears in her shop, in the flesh—then abducts her, demanding she release him from a curse. As the winds of magical war loom close, Olivia is caught between her family and her immortal mate. When evil stalks her, will she and Marrok choose between the dreams they’ve held dear or the love in their hearts?

Pocket will, no doubt, write something better for the book’s backcover, but you’ll get the drift for now. But, in the meaintime, I need a title! PLEASE give me your suggestions. We’ve ruled out things like A TOUCH OF MAGIC. People who give suggestions will be randomly selected to receive prizes. I’ll post them within a week or so here at My Wicked Muse. You might win a first chapter sneak peeks of DECADENT or WATCH ME or…who knows? If I select your suggestion as a working title, I’ll send you the backlist book of your choice, plus some other goodies. If my editor selects your title, I’ll send you a PDF of my first Doomsday Brethren book 2 months before release! So PLEASE start suggesting!

The other decision invovles new digs for me. I cycle out a new computer about every 3 years. This time, I’ve decided to switch to a notebook, I think. But they come in colors, dang it, which just makes it tough to choose. So, Pink or Red, and why? Okay, post away…

Return from RWA Nationals 2

July 24th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

I just realized that I got sidetracked by Harry and other important matters and didn’t finish up my recounting of the RWA National conference. If you’re a blog hopper, no doubt, you’ve read other accounts of the convention, but mine will be unique. I hope.

On Friday, I had a TON to do. It was meeting day, and there were lots of them. I wanted to make a few workshops, but alas…

About 10am, I met my friend Lee Swift at the hotel. He was a Stroke of Midnight finalist, which is the Passionate Ink award for unpublished manuscript. He finaled in the sci-fi category. Being the devious woman I am, I roped him into helping us set up for the Passionate Ink luncheon, which started at 11:30. For a bit over an hour, we stuffed bags, unpacked boxes, set up hats and other goodies on tables. Lots of wonderful volunteers came, and we had quite a system going.

The luncheon itself started at 11:30. The food was some of the best at the conference, and thanks to Angela Knight for contributing some of the proceeds of her non-fiction book, Passionate Ink: A Guide to Writing Erotic Romance, back to the chapter, so we had an absolutely lucious dessert. The best of the conference easily! Nearly everyone at our table was up for an award, but no one won. But we still managed to have a great time listening to agent Jessica Foust and Borders Romance Buyer, Sue Grimshaw. And playing with our hats. They were supposed to be cowboy hats with cow, zebra, leopard or tiger prints. No one told us when we ordered that they were velvet. People started calling them their pimp cowboy hats, and we had a laugh. All good fun.

Immediately after the luncheon, I spoke on a panel with editros Mary Altman and Heather Osborne, as well as fellow author Sienna Black about alternative genres in erotic romance. I talked about the how and why of BDSM and ménage. Or at least that was the plan. What I ended up speaking about more was the difference between submitting to NYC and epublishers, since I had the experience of both and the question came up. I think it was a successful panel, even if most of our audience was still back at the PI luncheon (which was running long), but they trickled in until the room was pretty full.

Following that–immediately–was the Berkley signing. Berkley had a great set up this year, with a very roomy place. Authors were positioned in a U-shaped format, and the folks registered for the conference who wanted free Berkley books (i.e. half the people registered) filed in. Because supplies were short and there were so many readers, they all knew the strategy: Get in the lines of the people you want most first. I’m happy to report that I’m told my line was long. I couldn’t see because I was sitting in a chair and the line formed directly behind the first person waiting. I’m not tall on the best of days, and sitting… Couldn’t see a thing. But I did run out of books very quickly, as did the lovely and talanted Jaci Burton, who sat beside me and ran out of books very quickly, too.

After that, I had a little lull in my day, but I met up with a few friends for a pick me up Diet Coke, then I headed off to get ready for the Berkley cocktail party, which started at 6.

I was a bit late getting there. They had snacks circulating around the room. The mushrooms were to die for. The jumbo shrimp looked delicious, but I never got to the middle of the room to get any; too busy chatting. I had the supreme pleasure of running into my former editor, Louisa Edwards. She was truly wonderful to work with, and I was sad to see her leave Berkley editorial staff because her husband relocated. She said she was going to send me her new email address. *tapping toe* I’m waiting… I also spoke briefly with Catherine Spangler, who is always good fun. I touched base with my current Berkley editor, Kate Seaver. We made plans for a quick meet the following day. But the highlight of my evening was meeting JR Ward. I really tried not to seem like a goofy fangirl and beg her to tell me all about Vishous. Tough exercising that sort of restraint, but I managed–somehow. I actually explained that we would be at Lora Leigh’s Reader Appreciation Weekend together in September and that I wanted to meet her. I’m hoping it didn’t come out like I had some sort of girl-crush on her. Then after the party, Lee and I split the hotel and we drove to a movie theather to catch a late screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I got back late and got into bed later than anticipated because Sylvia and I stayed up chatting, but Friday ended up being one of the best days of the conference!

I’ll give you the Saturday rundown later, but about prizes… Someone pointed out that I’d neglected to give away the first chapter excerpts of Decadent. How terrible of me! So, without further ado, here are the winners: Lauren, Heidi and JennL. Contact me and I’ll send you a PDF of that first chapter!

Have a happy Tuesday!

Happy Harry Day!

Yes, I’m joining the billion plus people blogging today about Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.

After years of waiting, I (and millions of fans) will finally find out the answer to all our questions about Harry, his friends and his enemies. I am so excited, I can hardly sit still!!!

Everyone has theories about Harry, and JKR makes it so hard to know what’s true, what’s not, what’s relevant, what’s a throwaway, etc. Often in the Harry Potter books, it’s not what she says, but what she DOESN’T say. JKR is clever that way. Whatever happens, I’m sure we’re in for lots of surprises!

My New Crush

July 19th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

Okay, so I don’t have time for TV. Really! I sneak some in, but I do NOT need more. But over the 4th of July holiday, RAH (Romance Author Husband), the Munchkin and I all went to see RAH’s family on the Carolina coast. My sister-in-law and her hubby said they were addicted to this show and that we HAD to watch it. This sort of thing happens every year. Several years ago, this is how we discovered Dog: Bounty Hunter, which Munckin still loves. But this year they introduced me to a man I can totally get into: Bear Grylls.

null

He’s the host of the the show Man Vs. Wild. Some of you may be familiar with Bear, so, um…bear with me if you are.

The premise of this show is that former British Special Forces soldier Bear Grylls is plopped down in the middle of harsh, often fatal terrain with a camera crew who’s not allowed to interact with him. He has nothing more than a canteen with a bit of water, a knife and a flint. He has 5 days to survive and make his way to civilization.

I think the first episode I watched, I merely sat stunned, as were RAH and Munchkin. This man knows A TON about surviving in the wilderness. He’ll eat ANYTHING to stay alive. He’s cunning and damn cute! By the second episode, RAH and my SIL’s husband had pretty much conceded that every other guy needed to turn in their man card because Bear is all man! (And he gets nekkid on the show occasionally!)

I’ve seen him survive in the Arctic circle, Kenya (where they dropped him right in the middle of a wild game plain and he encountered elephants, lions, rhinos, snakes…), the Kimberly Outback. He’s freakin’ amazing. Seriously! The show is on Discovery Channel.

I’m often asked where I get my ideas for books. Bear is looking pretty inspirational to me!

WATCH ME, SHOW ME – Read Us

July 17th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

Don’t those two titles make you want to read? That was my reaction when when I first heard these two titles.

null

As most of you know, my novella, WATCH ME, came out at Samhain last Tuesday to great reviews. In fact, it’s on the Samhain bestseller list now. BUT what you may not know is that it’s connected to another novella written by the fabulous Jaci Burton!

null

The connected story is called SHOW ME, and it’s available now! The fun part about writing these novellas for me was the timing. Our schedules didn’t match up exactly, and as a result, I was writing about her hero, Del, before she did! Jaci shared a picture with me and we’d talked about personalities, and wham! I was writing about Del, and she was telling me that I got him. It was great fun, and I think you’ll see a reflection of that when you read WATCH ME and SHOW ME, especially together.

Here’s a little bit about SHOW ME…just to entice you! But I’ll tell you now–it’s HOT!!!

BLURB:

Socialite Janine Bartolino has always been in the public eye. Managing her late father’s philanthropic interests, she keeps her pastimes above reproach. But when a surprise thirtieth birthday celebration at a private club opens her eyes to wicked pleasures, and an intriguing man offers her the chance of a lifetime to indulge her every secret fantasy, Janine takes a leap of faith…at great personal risk.

Phillipe “Del” Delacroix knows what Janine wants, even if she isn’t aware of it herself—a chance to explore the world of voyeurs and exhibitionists. Soon, the once staid and reserved woman transforms into a daring and passionate lover, giving Del everything he could ask for in a partner. But when something happens that puts Janine’s reputation, her career, all she’s worked for, in jeopardy… Del must prove that loving him is worth the risk.

EXCERPT:
(c) 2007 by Jaci Burton

He turned around. “Nobody’s even looking in our direction, not the slightest bit interested in you and I talking.”

“That’s because they wouldn’t expect anything to happen here.”

Del arched a brow. “Kind of gives one ideas, doesn’t it?”

Despite her irritation, she flushed with heat. “It doesn’t give me any ideas.”

“That’s okay. I have plenty for both of us. Come on. Let’s dance.”

“I told you I don’t…Del!”

Too late. He’d grabbed her hand and tugged her through the crowd and toward the dance floor. Short of causing a scene by digging in her heels and wrenching away from his grip, she was stuck having to go along with him. Dammit.

The dance floor was crowded, as well it should be. She’d hired a fabulous orchestra, the strains of violins playing a slow, seductive melody. Del pulled her to the middle of the floor and drew her against him.

“You look beautiful in gold,” he said, once again showing his prowess as a dancer, gliding her with no effort through the dance. “You dress to show off your body.”

She looked down at the dress, glittering, floor-length and hugging her curves. She loved this dress because it sparkled. She loved the slit in the middle because it showed off a little leg, her best feature, and hoped it would detract attention away from the fullness of her hips. Did she buy it to exhibit her body? Hardly. She’d never thought about that. This event was for the foundation, not to catch a man.

“I do not.”

“There’s nothing wrong with showing off your assets. You have a beautiful body.”

“You’re full of shit.”

“And you need to work on your self esteem. Maybe you need to spend more time looking in the mirror. Naked.”

“I don’t have body image issues. Nor do I spend my time staring at myself naked in the mirror.”

“Try it sometime,” he said, his gaze roaming toward her breasts. “You might enjoy it.”

She shook her head. “You and I are from completely different worlds, Del.”

“I don’t think so. I live in the same world you do. I run a successful business, am publicly involved in the community, but no one knows what I do for fun. I’m very discreet, but I enjoy my pleasures. I’ve spent several years as the owner of Sneak Peek while still maintaining Delacroix Motors, and guess what? No one has ever found out, because it’s none of their business and I make sure to keep it that way.”

“Lucky for you that you have that anonymity.”

“And I think you want what I have to offer. You’re just afraid to take that step.”

“I’m not afraid. I’m just not interested.”

The smile he cast wasn’t smug, exactly…more triumphant. “You’re worried. You think people watch you all the time. Look around. No one is paying attention to us.”

She did. As Del turned her, she gazed at the others on the dance floor. None of them looked at her. They were focused on their partners. And beyond the dance floor, people were talking amongst themselves or busying themselves at the back tables where the silent auction was going on.

Still, she felt eyes on her. Why? Why couldn’t she let go, as Del suggested?

“I could touch you intimately right here on the dance floor and no one would notice.”

Her breath caught and she shook her head, her traitorous body responding to his suggestion with a quiver of anticipation. “No.”

“The lights are low over the dance floor, the crowd noisy. People are packed in and enjoying each other. If I moved my hand like this…” His hand at her back traveled down, over her buttocks, gently caressing her. Janine sucked in her bottom lip as he palmed her ass and pulled her tighter into his embrace.

“It’s just a dance, Janine. Relax and enjoy it.”

Happy Tuesday!

Return from RWA Nationals

Hi, gang! I’m back…barely. It was a great conference!! Here’s a quick rundown of the first 2 days:

Wednesday – Arrived early, had breakfast with Sylvia Day (my roommate), Naughty Nikki and the Dawns, along with Jax (one of the Romance Divas). Fun way to start the conference, even if the eggs were tragic. We checked into our suite. It was supposed to be a 2 bedroom suite. I asked 3 times when we made the reservation if that was the case. There were supposed to be 4 of us sharing, but when were were told it was a 2 bed suite, we split up, shut off the living room and lived with it. The hotel said this happens all the time, and we wondered why they don’t change the way they describe it to patrons. Too logical? We were supposed to go to the Ellora’s Cave author lunch, but were dealing with hotel stuff. Instead, I joined Jaci Burton for lunch in the hotel. The food provided another underwhelming experience. Blah food and even worse restaurant and bar service were themes of this conference. That afternoon, I attended the Bookseller’s tea. Lots of amazing desserts, but I managed to avoid most of those and meet a few booksellers, as well as chat with Sue Grimshaw (the head romance buyer for Borders/Waldens) and meet Tina Trevaskies (a store asst. manager and wonderful Borders bookseller). Wedensday night was the literacy signing, and we were later told that we made nearly $60k for the cause! After a few drinks, it was off to bed for me. Thursday was going to be a long day.

Thursday – I had breakfast with my Pocket editor. We had a great time. She really put me at ease, and we talked about a ton of stuff beyond what we’re working on together. We met at 9 and left the restaurant about 11:30! I went back to the conference hotel and found out that Sue Grimshaw mentioned me and Sylvia Day as authors who sell well in erotic romance during part of her speach to the published authors!! Yipee! I also had a quick soda with Rhyannon Byrd, who had flown in for the afternoon to meet with her editor. Then I went to talk to my agent for a while, which is usually a fun conversation, but also this time productive. Planning is always good. I met Ann Leslie Tuttle with Harlequin, who had on this gorgeous spring green suit. Then it was off to get ready for the Pocket dinner that night. The dinner was at a very posh place called Stephen Pyles. OMG, the food was amazing!!! The dessert, something called Heaven and Hell cake, was 7 alternating layers of devil’s food cake and angel food cake with peanut butter mousse in the middle, surrounded by chocolate. To. Die. For. Seriously! Even better, though, was the people. All very kind and welcoming, they went out of their way to make you feel included. I loved it! Dinner started at 7 and I got back to the hotel at midnight. Wow, what a day!

More to come tomorrow!

The winner of an electronic copy of WATCH ME is Rachael. Contact me, and I’ll send you your copy of the book in whatever format you want!

Lots of Good News…and Some Bad

July 08th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

I’m baaacckk from the beach. That trip is another blog. Maybe I’ll squeeze it in before I go to RWA’s National Convention. If you’re in the Dallas area next Wednesday night, come out for the biggest romance booksigning you’ll ever see. It’s at the Hyatt Regency, near Reunion Tower. There will be around 350 authors there. It’s HUGE!! And the proceeds from the books sold are donated to literacy-related causes, so it’s all good. This is a who’s who of romance writers and everyone (including yours truly) will be there. But I digress…

I came back to lots of good news. It seems that reviewers had been reading my books and posting reviews in my absence. Here’s a slice of the fabulous news:

WATCH ME (Samhain Publising – July 10)
5 out of 5! “…a riveting story that is entertaining, romantic, and so sinfully hot that the pages steam.” ~ Romance Junkies

Recommended Read!I just love whatever Shelley Bradley writes, and Watch Me is no exception!” ~ Joyfully Reviewed

THE LADY AND THE DRAGON (Samhain Publishing – Available now!)
5 of out 5!I was absolutely entranced by The Lady and the Dragon! I loved this story and recommend it heartily. Pick up your copy today!” ~ Fallen Angels Reviews

5 out of 5! “…a stunning adventure, searing passion, and a touching read. With a well-written plot and realistic emotions, THE LADY AND THE DRAGON was consumed in one sitting.” ~ Romance Junkies

WICKED TIES (w/a Shayla Black – Berkley Heat – Available now!)
5 out of 5!Ms. Black has given us an incredible story in Wicked Ties… This is definitely not a book to be missed.” ~ A Romance Review

And my favorite of the bunch is from a Waldens/Borders Romance Expert/Bookseller, who said of my upcoming book DECADENT (w/a Shayla Black – Berkley Heat – October 2)…

I loved Wicked Ties, so I didn’t think that I could enjoyed Decadent even more, AND I DID!!! Decadent put you on my forever list of auto-buy authors (and for that matter an auto-recommend to my customers)!!!! You truly have a gift for writing – and writing HOT! ;-) There are very few erotic romance authors out there who write such complex characters (and storyline) without making it seem contrived! Bravo to you for being one of THE *best* out there! You are so talented in writing true emotion.

I must confess, I’m glowing all the way around!! I’m definitely feeling the love today.

The bad news is that romance pioneer and icon Kathleen Woodiwiss passed away last Friday. I just heard the news last night. If you’re new to romance, maybe you’ve not heard of her, but for everyone who’s loved this genre for years, she was IT. So many new readers and writers cut their teeth on her stories. SHANNA was my first. For many others, it was THE FLAME AND THE FLOWER or THE WOLF AND THE DOVE. She was truly the first and only of her kind. She hadn’t written a lot in recent years, as she’d been fighting the cancer that finally claimed her. But I know she was and will continue to be loved.

Naughty Nikki’s Thoughts of the Moment!

July 03rd, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

Y’all might wanna stand back, cause my brain is a scary place right now. I have entirely too much going on to focus on one thought at a time. So, this will be a multi-tasking blog post.

Are you ready?

I’ve been thinking since Friday night what to post on here while Shelley was gone. I was coming up completely blank. Zip. It was like someone had grabbed an Etcha Sketch (however you spell that) and given it a good shake. Then it ocurred to me. Shelley and I talked long ago about a blog that would be fun to do, so maybe you can help me kick it off. (And she’s biting her lower lip trying to figure out what I’m talking about because she has too much on her mind to remember.)

Do you have what it takes to be a Sexy Bitch from Hell? Are you already one? Or, do you know the perfect candidate for the winning title? My sisters would say I would hold that title, but believe me I know women far meaner. Tell us, what do you think it takes to be a Sexy Bitch from Hell? Do you think it would be a fun title to carry? I mean come on, I’m Naughty Nikki. Surely something with Sexy in the title can’t be worse than that. Now, while you’re partying and drinking tomorrow, be thinking of great traits and then come post them here.

Next thought, have you guys been reading the excerpts from WATCH ME? NO?!?! Why on Earth not? Get over there after this and read them. They are smoking hot. And don’t forget that Alejandro (God that’s a sexy name, can’t you just feel it roll off your tongue?) can be all yours in only 7 days!!! That’s right, but him, read him, fall in love with him, and you’ll want to do it all over again. And again. And again. I assure you, this is one man who can…deliver. Hmm, I’m thinking I should go tease some more people about Alejandro. Yummy doesn’t even begin to describe him.

Tell us, what do you look for in your ideal man? What makes you go weak in the knees and jittery in the stomach? After you post your anser here, feel free to jump over to Romantic Realm of Shadows and share your answer there too. We have a great thread set up about your favorite heroes, and we need some fresh, raw meat.

I have tons more in my little brain, but I’m afraid I’ll start boring you. So, instead let me wish you a very happy 4th of July. But um, try to behave. Or not.
